Defender of Open Space Scores ElectionTriumph
Soren Simonsen Wins SLC District 7 Primary

A key ally of the Utah Youth Soccer Association advanced in Tuesday's primary election for Salt Lake City Council District 7.

The key issue for the Utah Youth Soccer Association is a proposal by a private developer to rezone 13 acres of open space currently held in public trust by the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Board of Directors of the Utah Youth Soccer Association has called upon Salt Lake City's public officals to oppose this proposal and to instead support the construction of public park with multiple soccer fields.

The victor in Tuesday's election has pledged his solidarity with Salt Lake City's soccer community. Soren Simonsen has pledged his vote to save the 13 acres of open space from being rezoned. In November's general election, Simonsen will face either Gordon Poulson or Danny Walz, both of whom have made the same pledge. Simonsen's opponent will be announced after provisional ballots are counted and, perhaps, a recount performed. In contrast, the candidate not on the record as supporting UYSA's position finished last in the primary race and was eliminated.
