Utah Youth Soccer Coach of the Month
June 2009
Coach: Matt Bain
Current Team: Strikers FC (U14 Boys Premier - Fall 2009)
Coaching Experience: I have been coaching youth soccer for the past 14 years. I hold a "D" license and have been working to obtain my "C" license.
I have been lucky enough to coach both girls and boys teams in Premier. Currently Strikers FC is an independent team, though I have coached for other clubs.
Playing Experience: I learned to play Futebol de Salão (futsal) in Brazil and became addicted shortly thereafter. I started playing outdoor in leagues in college. I still play with a group of friends (mostly foreigners) at least once a week. My goal is to play when I am 60.
Favorite Soccer Teams: Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, ManUtd, and the Brazilian National Team
Favorite Soccer Players: Steven Gerrard, Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and Roberto Carlos
Most Memorable Soccer Experiences:
Playing: I remember almost always when we would split up teams for Futsal in Brazil, I was picked either first or second. Although I had not yet developed any dribbling or shooting skills, I could defend pretty well. That's why they would pick me first…so I wouldn't defend them.
As a spectator: Being in Brazil during the '86 World Cup. I vividly remember the Brazilian's anguish when they lost to France 3-4 in P.K.'s. I also remember Diego Maradonna's hand ball wondering if there would be any sort of protest after watching the replay. I remember watching Brazil WIN the 94 World Cup in P.K.'s vs. Italy and then their domination at the 2002 World Cup.
Coaching Philosophy: Make the opposition play your game. See the field of play and put yourself in a dangerous position (a position where you can score). Play Hard & Play Smart.
Favorite Movie: The Princess Bride
Favorite Book: The Princess Bride (yes, even better than the movie!)
Favorite Foods: Italian
Special Interests: Spending time with and supporting my family. I have been blessed with a wonderful/beautiful wife and 5 great kids. Between Soccer and Gymnastics is there time for anything else?
Matt Says: the players tell me I always say: "think", "be a student of the game", "see the field", "make the run!", "get dangerous!", "create space!", "PRESSURE!, COVER!, RECOVER!"
