July 2009

Coach: Skyler Bell

Current Team: Utah Force '92, Avalanche '96 Black, '96 Girls ODP

Coaching Experience: Coached my first team in 1999, but didn't get serious about it until 2003 with the UC Strikers '91 Boys. Started coaching girls in 2006 with Utah Force '92 and Brighton High School in 2007. Started as an ODP assistant coach last October, and took over the Avalanche '96s a month ago.

Playing Experience: Started playing as a 4-year-old in Boise, ID. Played club for Idaho Osprey, High School for Centennial High, and ODP for Idaho and Region IV. A knee injury after my senior year ended my competitive playing career before playing in college, but my wife and I did win several intramural titles at BYU!

Favorite Soccer Teams: US National Teams, RSL, Manchester United, Stanford, BYU and any team with one or more of my past or present players.

Favorite Soccer Players: Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm, Ben Olsen, Lionel Messi, Edgar Davids, Roberto Carlos, Juan Carlos Riquelme, all the players on my teams.

Most Memorable Soccer Experience(s): First, just being with my team as a youth player, especially at Regionals, Region Camp, and tournaments. Second, I met Mia Hamm during the 1999 World Cup. My team was playing in California at Regionals and she had inconspicuously watched my team play another team from South Cal. When I met her the next day after a World Cup game she remembered me. I melted. Third, scoring the game-winning goal to win our first state cup as U-11s at the end of the second overtime and getting carried off the field. Lastly, every training session as a coach. I love training.

Coaching Philosophy: How you run the race - your planning, preparation, practice, and performance - counts for everything. Winning or losing is a by-product, an aftereffect, of that effort.

Favorite Movie: The Usual Suspects, The Godfather, Heat, Seven, Silence of the Lambs

Favorite Book: On Leadership by John Wooden

Favorite Food: Anything my wife makes (except that one thing that one time . . . that was gross.

Special Interests: Finishing law school in December, my family (Karli - wife, Payton - 3-year-old son, Brooklyn - 2-year-old daughter, and the little girl joining our family in October), college basketball and sports in general, writing/reading non-fiction, gardening, travel, movies, yada yada yada . . .

Skyler Says: "Each member of your team has a potential for personal greatness; the leader's job is to help them achieve it." John Wooden
