Frequently Asked Questions

What is ODP?

ODP is a US Soccer National Program designed to identify and develop talented youth soccer players throughout the country to represent their state, region and national team programs at the highest-level of soccer competition. At the first level, the Utah Youth Soccer Association (UYSA) identifies a pool of players in each of the appropriate age groups. These players are identified and selected from tryouts held across the state. This program is a supplement to the player's Club, Competitive or High School Teams. More information about ODP can be found on our website. ODP Home Page. Please note that all information and changes pertaining to ODP are posted on our website. You can access the ODP page through the UYSA website at www.utahyouthsoccer.net on the left choose ODP. It is important that you get used to checking this site on a regular basis.

What age is eligible to participate in ODP?

ODP is structured on a calendar year (January 1st through December 31st). The age groups recognized for the 2009-10 seasonal year are those players born in: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Where and When are Tryouts held?

Tryouts will be held in Hyde Park & St. George, Layton, Sandy and Orem. For selection purposes, players are strongly encouraged to attend tryouts at more than one site. Once the actual sites are secured, we will post that information to our website. Calendar of Events

The tryout fee is $40.00 - this fee covers all four tryout dates. Online registration is required. Your registration covers all four tryout sessions. We recommend you attend at least 2. To avoid the $20 late charge for signing up late or at the tryouts, please have your online registration completed by October 22. We will not be able to guarantee a 2009-10 tryout t-shirt to those players registering after October 22. If we run out of 2009-10 t-shirts, late registrations will be given a numbered t-shirt from a prior year. What do they do at Tryouts?

Each tryout consists of a three hour "training" period. Tryouts generally consist of training exercises and games that are assessed by UYSA ODP Staff who evaluate players based on their technical, tactical, psychological and physical development in the game.

How does the selection process work and what comes next?

After tryouts, a maximum of up to 48 players are selected in each age group. Selection notification is done by email prior to Thanksgiving and will also be posted on the website. Training begins in December with player clinics, and age specific training begins the first Saturday in January. Exception: The 1998 and 1999 age groups have a modified training schedule and will participate in an 8v8 tournament within their training pool.

The schedule will be posted on the ODP page of our website under Schedules: Training Schedule

Winter training will take place at selected venues along the Wasatch Front. Currently, we utilize BYU, Neupark Indoor (Park City), Juan Diego, U of U, Ultimate Indoor and sometimes (weather permitting) we are outside. The schedule will be posted on the website when it is finalized.

From the player pool, a team of 18 is selected to attend the ODP Championships, held in Phoenix in January. (It is anticipated, we will take players from the 1995, 1994 and 1993 age groups only). In March, 18 players are selected in each age group and this will be the State ODP Team. Four additional players will be identified and will continue to train with the team as alternates in case of injury or other circumstances. Exception: The players in the 1998 and 1999 age groups will keep their pool of 48. These two age groups will have NO out of state travel.

In June, the Mountain States Friendlies are held and training resumes for each age group in preparation for ODP Region Camp in July. All 1999 and 1998 pool players and selected 1997 - 1993 age group players will participate in this event.) In August

Who do I contact if I need help?

If you have further questions or need help registering online. Please call the UYSA state office at 801-268-3365. You can also contact Technical Department Coordinator Colette Albretsen directly at uysacolette@yahoo.com or 801-694-9478.

Is Financial Assistance Available?

UYSA makes every effort to ensure that ODP participation is achievable for everyone, regardless of cost. Limited, partial funding is available for families whose child could not otherwise participate. In special cases, UYSA can provide an installment payment plan. If you foresee a financial problem, applications for financial assistance or requests for an installment plan are available to players. Applications must be received well in advance of any scheduled event for which you are applying for financial assistance. For more information with regard to financial assistance and an application form, please contact the UYSA State Office. Additional assistance may also be obtained by contacting your UYSA club, league or district representatives. The USYS Region IV Offices also offer financial assistance; please access their website at www.regioniv.com. To ensure confidentiality, please make all requests attention: Colette Albretsen, UYSA Technical Department Coordinator, at uysacolette@yahoo.com.

However, funding is extremely limited. So, we have a letter on our website that we ask you to use. This letter can be sent to family members, neighbors, friends, businesses, doctors, dentists etc. It works well for many players. We encourage all players to utilize this sponsorship letter, however, ALL players requesting financial assistance will have to send out 20 of these letters prior to being considered for assistance. It has a great success rate and can be a valuable tool if you need financial assistance to participate in ODP. An updated copy of this letter will be posted to our website in October. You can find it on the ODP page under Resources. We work diligently to keep the costs of ODP reasonable. However, it does cost money, please make arrangements to pay ODP fees in a timely manner.
